Sugaring vs. Waxing for Sensitive Skin: A Guide from Our Chicago and Naperville Spas
If your skin turns red just thinking about hot wax, you're not being dramatic. Some skin reacts, and it deserves a choice. We offer both sugaring and waxing in Lincoln Square, Chicago and in downtown Naperville, with the same Roses doing both, so we have no reason to talk you out of either one. This is how the two compare for sensitive skin, and how to choose.
What sugaring is
Sugaring uses a paste made of sugar, water and citrus. That's the whole list. It's warmed to about body temperature, so there's no hot wax anywhere near your skin. The paste is smoothed on and lifted off in the direction your hair grows, and it grips the hair rather than your skin, which is why most people find it gentler than wax. Afterward, anything left behind rinses off with warm water. It's plant-based, with no strips to throw away.
How waxing compares
Wax is applied warm and pulled off against the direction of growth. It's quick, it works well, and plenty of our Lena Loves prefer it. If that's you, we do waxing too, with the same care and the same Roses. Waxing usually costs a little less for the same area; you'll find both menus side by side on our sugaring pages.
Which is better for sensitive skin?
If your skin reacts to things, sugaring is a sensible place to start. Because the paste stays at body temperature and holds onto the hair instead of the skin, people with sensitive or reactive skin usually do better with it. Sugar can also pick up shorter hairs than wax can.
Neither one is painless, and we won't pretend otherwise. Both remove hair from the root, so you'll feel it. Your first appointment is usually the most sensitive, and it gets easier as hair grows back finer. You can always ask your Rose to slow down.
How to get ready
- Let your hair grow to about a quarter of an inch, roughly the length of a grain of rice. That's about two weeks of growth, or ten days to two weeks after shaving.
- Skip heavy lotion or oil on the area that morning.
- If it's easy, exfoliate gently a day or two before.
- Skip retinol on the area for about five days before.
- Tell us when you book if you use a prescription that thins the skin.
- Nervous? Say so when you arrive. We'll go at your pace.
Unjudgmental, gender-affirming care

Our Roses have completed trauma-informed and gender-affirming training, and are trained in oncology protocols and for chemical sensitivities. Pricing never changes with gender. If there's anything you'd rather not say at the front desk, add it to your booking notes and we'll simply be ready. If you're in treatment, or pregnant, check with your care team first, then tell us. Booking a Brazilian for the first time? Let us know so we can walk you through it.
How long results last
For most people, sugaring results last three to five weeks. On a regular cycle of about every four weeks, regrowth tends to come back softer and sparser over time. If ingrown hairs are your worry, regular sugaring plus gentle exfoliation between visits helps, though no method can promise you'll never see one. Tell your Rose and they'll talk it through with you.
